RAM Construction was first approached by the client approximately a year before the works commenced, while they were in the process of purchasing the property in Eastbourne.
A property survey had identified concerns with the condition and stability of the front garden retaining walls. We were initially asked to provide an indication of the likely cost of the works, helping the client understand the potential liability before proceeding with the purchase.
Following the purchase, the client decided against rebuilding the entire frontage and instead commissioned RAM Construction to undertake a targeted programme of repairs and improvements.
The principal works involved the overhaul of approximately 27 linear metres of green sandstone wall, approximately 2 metres high, together with the existing brick capping. The masonry works were undertaken using lime mortar, sympathetic to the existing construction.
Before commencing, RAM Construction also considered alternative methods of providing additional structural retention. Following consideration of the options and associated costs, a targeted repair and overhaul programme was adopted.

One of the most significant challenges was the location of the property and the highway restrictions associated with completing the works.
The position of the wall meant that a public footpath closure was required, with an allowance included for the application and permit.
With the property positioned on a crossroads, careful coordination was required around traffic management, site access, deliveries and the construction programme.
Managing the permitted working period was particularly important. RAM Construction worked within the highway approval process and, as the project progressed, successfully secured two extensions, enabling the works to continue without unnecessary interruption.
The condition of the existing masonry also required a considered approach. Rather than adopting a complete replacement strategy, the works combined an overhaul of the sandstone wall with targeted structural crack repairs where required.
RAM Construction successfully delivered a targeted and commercially considered solution to the deteriorating retaining wall, avoiding the substantially greater intervention of rebuilding the entire frontage.
The project addressed approximately 27 linear metres of green sandstone wall and brick capping, combining traditional lime mortar work with localised Helibar crack repairs.
From providing advice during the client's property purchase through to managing the highway restrictions and delivering the masonry repairs, the project demonstrates RAM Construction's ability to combine traditional masonry expertise, careful project planning and practical problem-solving.
